I’ve read Emeraldwind’s journals at the old CoD boards, and I was pretty intrigued with this template. I am not sure where exactly this template stands with Og’s and Bm’s but I believe there is power here. It is a viable way to play if you want to be different from the masses. And Explorer Gear makes this template so much more easier to play. Get it as soon as you can.
Can a complete newbie play this template? We’ve all heard stories of more experienced players telling newbies to re-roll as Og’s when the poor guy doesn’t even know what town he’s in. I believe it can be...although it all depends on how soon the first gold letter spawns. Or even the first red letter. I’ll write there rest of this starter guide from the point of view of a newbie... without someone to twink them or give them gear.
How to get Life Magic (The first 16 levels)
Lvl 1-6:
First off, learn all your lvl 1 war spells. Kill the vermin on the outskirts of any newbie town. Never overlook a Drudge Prowler, I’ve personally had the best luck of getting gold letters from Prowler kills. If you find a Gold or even a Red letter, it is imperative that you turn it into either the Society or Explorer Wand of Acid. This will give you at least a limited ability to use life magic. I personally only learned 2 spells, Stamina to Mana Self I, and Heal Self I. If you find more letters, get the Wand of Frost next followed by the Necklace of Focus. Get the Wand of Fire last, not as important as the others.
*To find out how to get the proper letter rewards...check out the link to Maggie the Jackcat’s site in the resource section.
Auroch Cows are a boon for newbie mages. They are very slow, even a typical 10 quickness mage can outrun them. Plus, they are lvl 10 which means they give great experience points for a lvl 1 mage, one which is more than capable of killing them. They hit extremely hard, but I feel that is a good thing...you learn not to stand in there and tank for too long, a good skill to know for the rest of your life in AC
*There is a downside...Aurochs are like a Newbie’s Tusker...Great xp...poor loot. Oh and the camping of the yaraq spawn is insane at times
Lvl 7-12:
I feel these levels are very easy. The reason is your spec war skill has enough sheer power on its own to kill beach baddies (Shallow Sharks, Mud/ Water Golems, Blue Phyntos Wasps). Simply pick a monster from full radar distance away and start firing! Simple and effective. Be careful around Azure Gromnies and stay away from the occasional Broken Fragment or Shadow Child that spawns.
*You can come here at an earlier lvl...but Aurochs are still pretty good xp till lvl 6. I know some people have stayed at the beaches till lvl 15...but there is a better way.
Lvl 12-16:
Now this is a bit tougher. The way I got to lvl 16 was via the Undead & Zombie route Now this will keep you on your toes. Notice (or not) that I never mentioned armor yet. Well that is because it was not needed. You can fight the first 12 lvls in a clean towl and still do fine...but it won’t work against Undead. They attack with all 3 types of physical damage, usually not too hard though. (That is where armor helps, get some if you ever plan on tanking more than 1 undead The nasty thing is the war spells they cast. Lvl 17 Zombies cast up to lvl 3 war spells...not a good thing. But they are a good way to get to lvl 16.
Congratulations! You now have past your first major hurdle!
